Reclaiming the erotic (as feeling alive)

Reclaiming the erotic (as feeling alive)

These are notes for a podcast that has influenced my recent thinking and ways of being in my body in this life. She has helped me to reclaim the word erotic as something I desire in everyday life, not just in private, hidden spaces.

Below are my notes for this podcast.

Podcast here.

People & works mentions during the podcast

Audrey Lorde

Here is Audre Lorde’s essay on the uses of the erotic.

The first 1/3 of the podcast above contains a great recording/video of Audre Lorde talking in public.

Adrienne Marie Brown

I am obsessed with how love and joy are the actual tools we need to move against the culture of fear and scarcity. We experts at deconstruction and tearing systems and each other apart, but if what we pay attention to grows, how can we be more mindful about growing our capacity for love?

~ Adrienne Marie Brown

bell hooks

Love makes us feel more alive. Living in a state of lovelessness, we feel we might as well be dead. Everything within us is silent. We are unmoved...

Our cultural obsession with death consumes energy that could be given to the art of loving.

about this podcast(er)

Ayandastood is a podcaster who has blown and illuminated my mind several times. Below are some notes I took during the beginning of the podcast above:

Ayandastood introduces powerful truths that once we feel alive and become aware of that feeling, we want to bring it into our life and can’t tolerate deadening ways of living anymore (citing). Eroticism is not merely sexual.

yes, we may feel alive/erotic energy during sex, but we can feel eroticness all around us, not just during sex. What if you allowed yourself the fullness of your aliveness?

The people that love you should make you feel alive. But what if they make you feel dead inside?

Visualizing the roots of renewables

I drew this illustration because I can't stop thinking about this topic. I am on a journey to redefine what it means to be a good engineer. As part of this, I want to understand how we can visualize the systemic impact of innovative technologies.

🦋 The question that guides me:

Engineers design for structural integrity. But why does this not include social integrity? How can something be considered structurally safe if the structures it requires harm humans and other beings?

Resources related to the illustration

Look at these ticking numbers.

These numbers show me that pollution and exploitation aren’t accidental—they're built into the system by design. I take the position that engineers need to wake up to this reality, because only by acknowledging these intentional shortcomings—like Tesla’s quiet reliance on cobalt from the DRC despite known child labor—can we begin to confront and change them.

What are the Just Transition Principles?

The Just Transition Principles are guidelines that help us to stay focused on addressing the root causes of environmental injustice as opposed to building technological quick fixes that perpetrate ecological destruction and human suffering.

The principles are:

Living well without harming others

Meaningful Work

Self-Determination

Equitable Redistribution of Resources and Power

Regenerative Ecological Economics

Culture and Tradition

Solidarity

Let’s Build What We Need Right Right Now

The Just Transition Framework: moving from an extractive economy to a regenerative economy

Why roots?

The word radical inherits its meaning from latin, meaning rooted. I drew roots because environmental injustice didn't start with CO2 in the atmosphere. Much more likely, it started with a state of mind that justified the destruction of ecosystems, displacement of people, and child labor for the sake of technological & scientific development. This way of doing things around here has finally led to the warming of the whole planet.

To me, radicalness means to find a solution to a problem by going back to the roots of the injustice (see more on radicalness). In an engineering context, much of the injustice occurs via the supply chains, somewhere far away from the deployment of clean energy products.

Plants have roots. The roots of plants are some of the most intelligent parts of their systems as they investigate and make decisions separately yet connected to the larger organism. Therefore, I argue that being a radical engineer also means to be a critical thinker. Obviously and sadly, critical theory is a term barely stated as a core piece of a good engineer.

The mining needed to sustain green technology

Wind energy and solar require 7-18 times more minerals per energy produced compared with fossil-fuel based equivalents (per unit of energy produced). To put the energy transition effort into context, the below quotes might help.

We will need 2x more copper than we have mined throughout all human history to feed the Western green transition plans.

~ IRENA report

To convert our current energy systems as planned by Western governments, we would face the largest increase of production of metals in human history.

~ Mark Mills

We need to analyze with nuance!

Obviously, fossil fuels also need to be extracted from this planet (and such mining doesn't fall under the category of "mineral" mining as mentioned above). If we compare total mining operations, some voices state that:

A fossil fuel economy requires 535x more mining than a clean energy economy.

~ Michael Thomas, Article in Distilled

The problem will always stay the same. Mining is an inherently extractive process which has to harm our mother earth and the beings that depend on the land where mining takes place. Since there is so much inherent harm to land and people involved, we have to move very consciously and center the needs of the most affected groups and ecosystems.

Some mining projects try to involve communities at varying rates of success. It is extremely hard to find success stories in this complicated field.

Have been thinking about your success with bringing good exhausts into private spaces to increase air quality and wellbeing of people.

And I’ve been thinking about Signage - or: an attempt to shape a communication, an awareness

Exhaust hoods and better living spaces will be in the future

People will have nicer places to live (~ because of your work and of general progression of everything engineered and architected

I think of Germany (~ living spaces there are pretty nice; they are better; not perfect;

And while houses in Germany are better, people barely understand or know the GOOD INTENTIONS that were put into building them because they didn’t build them

And so, CULTURALLY SPEAKING, the intention behind building a HEALTHY, BEAUTIFUL place for Wellbeing is LOST

Somewhere along the way of making our world prettier and better, the intention of those shaping the world toward betterment was lost

A story that isn’t told

And I see the big danger here in unaware people living in paradise, not knowing how to use it, how to appreciate it

Signage

Signage is interesting

It tells the tiny stories

It places something into your head without your consent

You sorta have to read it

It’s a lot of warnings

A lot of: “this is the worst situation possible”

And that’s the narrative that engineers shape

Engineer tell stories too

But most of these stories are “instructions” and “warnings”

And I think we need to start telling more stories about “we put care into building this for these reasons”

So there grows a cultural memory and awareness of why we live in the world we live in

I think this will do good to human civilization in many ways - I won’t list all them right now

At the core, there is an energy shift in trying to pass on something, rather than hand off a product

The point is that yogic postures are useful only to the extent to which they facilitate fixing the mind completely.

~ Bryant (2015, p. 284)

Why was asana offered to yoga students as a physical practice?
Asana is conducive to a meditative practice. Postures and movement practice helps to absorb citta and still vrittis. The very first line of Patanjali's Yoga Sutras is "yogas citta-vritti-nirodhah" - yoga is the stilling of the fluctuations (vritti) of consciousness (citta).

"bliss sheath." our most subtle layer. pure consciousness, joy, connection to the eternal.

> My thoughts on how we depict Koshas

I feel that it is most intuitive to depict the physical layer as the smallest (densest layer). Hwoever, most depiction depict the layers as in the image below.

While I see the purpose of depiction below in the sense that it helps us to understand the practice of "peeling away layers," it doesn't align with my intuitive understand of how I feel in my body.

Why I argue that we should depict the Koshas as depicted in the first image on this web page:

If consciousness is all-pervasive and primary, how could it be covered by anything? The annamaya kosha (physical body) isn't the largest container - it's the most contracted crystallization of awareness. The anandamaya kosha (bliss body) isn't small and hidden - it's vast and pervasive, interpenetrating the denser layers. The physical body is where consciousness meets the most resistance, becomes most defined and bounded.

> Two practices for each Kosha

annamaya (physical):

asana practice (moving the body)

mindful eating (awareness of food as medicine)

pranamaya (energy):

pranayama (breath work)

walking in nature (feeling life force in the world)

manomaya (mental):

meditation (observing thoughts)

journaling (processing emotions)

vijnanamaya (wisdom):

svadhyaya (self-study, reading philosophy)

sitting with difficult questions (cultivating discernment)

anandamaya (bliss):

yoga nidra (deep relaxation)

gratitude practice (connecting to joy)

Related marbles

This insight was inspired by this video on ending fear as the path toward awakening.
